Oculus for Business was a virtual reality training solution for enterprises. While the solution worked well, IT and security teams at these enterprises now had to set up, distribute, configure, and keep track of hundreds or thousands of Oculus headsets for their company.
Build a Mobile Device Management (MDM) tool for enterprises to manage Oculus headsets at scale with the same level of control, insights, and efficiencies used to manage traditional work devices such as smartphones and laptops.
More specifically, we worked with the Oculus team to build a mobile app to rapidly scan and provision headsets and a web app to configure and manage headsets once they were associated with an account.
We started by interviewing the client to better understand the problems faced by their customers, use cases we needed to support, and technical constraints to be aware of.
We discovered that companies needed a way to:
We also researched existing enterprise MDM solutions and got our hands on an Oculus headset to familiarize ourselves with the current device setup and app installation process.
Once we understood the business needs, user needs, and Oculus ecosystem we thought through the main flows and interactions of the web and mobile app. Designs were tested along the way by the the client’s user research team.
These evolved into high-fidelity mockups and prototypes that were improved based on user feedback. We leveraged Facebook's design system for the UI.
Final designs were handed off to the client’s developers via Invision. We also supported developers during the build by answering questions, making design adjustments, and conducting design acceptance testing.
The Oculus for Business MDM solution was announced at F8, Facebook's annual conference, and was rolled out to pilot customers including companies like DHL, Walmart, and State Farm.
